As far as heat, I have MSP manifolds on my car, and I didn't use the stock heatshields because of clearance issues with the intake pipes I made. I wrapped them with header blankets (you can find them on the internet) and overlayed that with a layer of the aluminum sheet you find in the muffler repair kit you can buy off the shelf at any auto parts store. Not a metallurgist, but from what little I do understand, wrapping stainless exhaust manifolds helps their longevity because it doesn't allow for such rapid cooling.
